What's the Difference?

Many people ask what's the the difference between a wedding cake and a birthday cake and WHY does a wedding cake cost more. I can't speak for every place but I can tell you the difference here at Buy Me Cake.

Here at Buy Me Cake we any tiered cake would fall into the Wedding Cake category. Any cake that is only one tier would fall into the Birthday Cake category. The third category that comes up often is the Carved Cake category.

The first difference you will notice when you cut into a Wedding Cake versus when you cut into a Birthday Cake. Inside a Birthday Cake you have 3 layers of cake and 2 layers of filling, inside a Wedding Cake you have 4 layers of cake and 3 layers of filling.

Next when you are getting a Wedding Cake/Tiered Cake that serves 75 people or more you come in for a free consultation where you will taste 6 different cake flavors and all the standard fillings. Most Birthday Cake orders are done over the phone or through email with no tasting or face-to-face meeting.

Last is the time that goes into a Wedding Cake versus a Birthday Cake. When you meet with Buy Me Cake for your wedding cake you first get your free consultation, then we will draw up a sketch of your Wedding Cake. When we create a wedding cake it takes much longer than a single tiered Birthday Cake. All the cakes must be stacked together which takes much more time than just boxing up a single tiered Birthday Cake. Most of the time the design and decoration on a wedding cake is more intricate and detailed than a Birthday Cake.

The last category is the Carved Cake. These cakes are on a whole different level. Many carved cakes do not have many servings but they take much more time to create and decorate than a Birthday Cake or a Wedding Cake. So you will see a Carved Cake that only serves a handful of people but can cost more than a Wedding Cake that serves a hundred people.

Pricing a cake is like pricing car repairs. The cost of the ingredients isn't the main cost of a cake. It is the time and skill put into the cake by the decorator that is the main cost. Just like getting you car repaired. It's not just the parts but the labor to fix those parts.
